These H.Upmann photos show older and current images of the famous cigar brand. Exterior and interior views of the former factories on Calle Virtudes, Calle Amistad and Calle 23 document the changes over the decades - from the founding in 1844 to the move to Vedado and Belascoain. Each photograph preserves a piece of H.Upmann's history and reveals how closely tradition, craftsmanship and the spirit of the times in Havana are intertwined.

Another production facility (ca. 1870) was set up on Calle Cuba No. 64, the house is located in Habana Vieja (Old Town).

The very first, still very small factory of the H.Upmann brand was located on Calle San Miguel No.85 in Havana's Centro Habana district from 1844. Other factories soon followed.

Inaugurated in 1891, this large factory (only part of the building still exists) on Avenida Carlos III was a magnificent building, called „La Madama“ by the workers.

The H.Upmann factory „La Madama“ has been producing H.Upmann brand cigars on the Avenida Carlos III since around 1890.

H.Upmann brand cigars were manufactured on Calle Virtudes from 1937 to 1944, as were the Montecristo, Particulares and El Patio brands. Later it was a tobacco warehouse.

This is the entrance to the former H.Upmann factory. It is located in the Centro Habana district, a neighbourhood with narrow streets and mostly small houses.

Such posts on the houses are very typical in Havana's old neighbourhoods. Sometimes you can find names or coats of arms on them.

The H.Upmann factory on Calle Amistad 407, still in operation here. Cigars were made here from 1944 to 2003.

This is the building of the former factory, which was later a school and is now empty. There is a new coat of paint almost every year.

A doorpost on the former H. Upmann factory, not with a name but with ornaments. It probably dates from the time before the building housed a factory, so it is much older.

This is a lift in the former H.Upmann manufactory. The year 1844 stands for the founding of the brand. Cigars have only been made in this factory since 1944.

In 2003, the H.Upmann brand moved to Calle 23 (the streets in Havana's Vedado district have numbers, not names). Even before this time, this was a cigar factory; the very first Montecristos came from here.

The company sign for the H.Upmann brand. It hung on the building on Calle 23 from 2003 to 2011, when it moved on with the brand.

The factory was freshly renovated when we moved in in 2003. Only a few years later, damage was discovered in the roof, which has probably not been repaired to this day. The building is still empty.

At the top of the gable is the H.Upmann brand logo and the official name of the manufactory: „Empresa de Tabaco Torcido José Martí“

Since 2011, this has been the H.Upmann Manufaktur on Calle Belascoain No.852. Before that it was the Romeo Manufaktur, and before that the El Rey del Mundo Manufaktur.
