Die Marke verdankt ihren Namen dem treuen Begleiter von Don Quijote aus dem berühmten Roman von Miguel de Cervantes. Über Jahrzehnte hinweg wechselte Sancho Panza mehrfach den Besitzer, bevor die Marke ab 1930 ihren endgültigen Durchbruch schaffte und internationale Anerkennung gewann.

The Sancho Panza brand has had many different owners over the years. Not only did the brands change hands, but manufacturers also joined together in ever-new constellations.

The Sancho Panza brand is one that importers are fond of selecting for an Edición Regional: a limited number of cigars available in only one country.

The Sancho Panza brand boxes are very understated, with the logo featuring the brand name standing on its own on a white background.

Before the revolution, the Sancho Panza brand's range was quite extensive. Currently, only one format is produced as standard: the Belicosos, a pyramid.

Emilio Ohmstedt produced Sancho Panza brand cigars from 1848 in a small manufactory on Calle Angeles in Havana's Centro Habana district.

Under the ownership of Salvador Perito (or Pareto), Sancho Panza brand cigars were manufactured at Calle Manrique No.142 in Havana from around 1870 to 1898.

According to the official register of 1873, the factory of Salvador Perito y Cia. was, however, located on Calle San Nicolas, where the Sancho Panza brand cigars were made from around 1870 to 1898.

After several changes of ownership, the Cifuentes family, owners of the Partagás brand, took over the Sancho Panza brand in 1927. At that time, the Sancho Panza brand cigars were produced at Calle Industria No. 520 in Havana.

The success of the Sancho Panza brand began in 1930. The El Rey del Mundo Cigar Company took over the brand, and production was carried out at Calle Belascoain No. 852.

From 1930, the Sancho Panza and El Rey del Mundo brands were reunited within the El Rey del Mundo Cigar Company. The factory at Calle Belascoain No.852 once belonged to the Cuesta y Rey Company, as can be read on the gable. The factory was later known for many years as the El Rey del Mundo factory.

The 5th Earl of Lonsdale, Hugh Cecil Lowther, had his own cigar created and memorialised his name with a format designation, namely Lonsdale.
